This work supports The Healthy Brain Initiative: The Public Health Road Map for State and National Partnerships’ goal of developing a competent workforce.

The Solution

A Public Health Approach to Alzheimer's and Other Dementias

Emory Centers-TTAC created an introductory curriculum titled A Public Health Approach to Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias. The curriculum was piloted by 25 faculty members in 2016 before being launched and made freely accessible to the public. The curriculum is comprised of four modules that consist of a faculty guide, presentation slides, case studies, video resources, and sample test questions. Additional materials have been added since the initial launch, including three online learning modules and additional classroom activities. Initially the curriculum was intended for use by undergraduate students of public health, but has since been expanded and marketed to undergraduate and graduate students of public health and related disciplines such as social work, gerontology, nursing, psychology, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

impact and results

A Public Health Approach to Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias is a peer-reviewed, competency-based curricular resource that can be easily incorporated into academic and professional settings. The curriculum is free and accessible online and has been adapted to support virtual learning through the creation of three online modules. The purpose of the curriculum is to increase knowledge and interest among the future public health workforce, educate the current workforce and encourage them to apply knowledge gained to practice, and improve health outcomes for individuals with Alzheimer’s, as well as their caregivers.
